Severe Air Pollution In Delhi: Government Responds With Action And Health Initiatives
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and Environment Minister Gopal Rai visited Anand Vihar following a severe rise in air pollution. The Air Quality Index (AQI) at this location reached 445, categorised as 'Severe' by the Central Pollution Control Board on Sunday morning. This prompted immediate inspection and action from the government officials.
A survey conducted by LocalCircles revealed that 36% of families in Delhi-NCR have members suffering from pollution-related health issues like sore throat, cough, and breathing difficulties. The survey gathered over 21,000 responses, highlighting the significant impact of air pollution on residents in the region.

Pollution Control Measures
Atishi stated that anti-pollution measures are being strictly implemented across Delhi. She mentioned the formation of 99 teams dedicated to dust control efforts throughout the city. Additionally, more than 325 smog guns are being deployed to combat pollution effectively.
The Public Works Department (PWD) and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have mobilised all available resources to tackle pollution. Roads in Anand Vihar have been repaired to minimise dust, and encroachment removal drives have been conducted at congestion points to improve air quality.
Impact on Residents
The survey also found that 27% of families reported having members with runny noses and congestion due to poor air quality. Meanwhile, another 27% of respondents indicated they were not experiencing any health issues related to pollution.
A resident noted that the cold weather in Delhi has exacerbated pollution levels, advising people to wear masks for protection. Nehru Park and nearby areas recorded an AQI of 254, classified as 'Poor', while Delhi's overall AQI stood at 265.
Addressing Cross-Border Pollution
Anand Vihar's proximity to Uttar Pradesh contributes significantly to its high AQI levels. Atishi mentioned plans to discuss with the UP government about buses entering from their state, which are a major source of pollution in Anand Vihar.
The table below shows AQI readings from various locations:
| Location | AQI |
|---|---|
| Alipur | 306 |
| Anand Vihar | 445 |
| Dwarka | 304 |
| Jahangirpuri | 350 |
| Mundka | 330 |
| Rohini | 322 |
| Shadipur | 307 |
| Wazirpur | 370 |

The government is actively working on solutions to reduce air pollution in Delhi. With ongoing efforts and cooperation between states, there is hope for improved air quality soon.
