Ganesh Chaturthy
Nagapattinam, Aug 28: Central Zone Inspector General of Police M Ramasubramani today reviewed the security arrangements for the annual festival at Vailankanni, the world famous Christian pilgrim town in the district.

The festival would commence tomorrow with the hoisting of holy flag and concludes on September 8. As several lakhs of pilgrims are expected to throng the holy town during the festival days, the police have made unprecedented security arrangements at the town, police said.

Speaking to reporters Ramasubramani said a total of 2000 police personnel have been deployed as part of security arrangements. Surveillance cameras have been installed at strategic locations, he said.

Rescue teams comprising personnel from police and fire service, expert divers, and fishermen had been formed to deal with any emergency when the pilgrims take bath in the sea. District Collector T Munusamy has said arrangements have been made for pure drinking water, sanitation, lighting and transport for the convenience of the pilgrims.
