Schools, Colleges, Banks And Offices To Remain Closed In UP On October 7: Check Details

Uttar Pradesh will observe a public holiday on October 7 to mark the birth anniversary of Maharishi Valmiki, the revered sage and author of the Ramayana. On this day, all schools, colleges, government offices, and banks across the state will remain closed.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the holiday and said the day would be celebrated with grandeur throughout the state. He stressed that Maharishi Valmiki, a highly respected figure especially among Dalits, holds immense religious and cultural significance. "A public holiday will be observed in the state on October 7, the birth anniversary of Lord Valmiki. An uninterrupted recitation of the Ramayana will be organised in every temple," the Chief Minister stated.

CM Yogi also shared the update on his official X handle, writing: "October 7 is the auspicious birth anniversary of the revered Maharishi Valmiki. We are announcing that it will be a public holiday in the state on that day."

This year, Valmiki Jayanti falls on October 7 according to the Hindu calendar. The day is widely celebrated across India with processions, tableaux, and cultural events held in several regions to honour the sage's contributions.

The Story of Maharishi Valmiki

According to mythology, Maharishi Valmiki was born to Varuna - the ninth son of Maharishi Kashyap and Aditi - and his wife Charshani. He is regarded as the composer of the epic Ramayana and as a spiritual guide to many.

A well-known legend explains how he came to be called "Valmiki." While performing deep meditation, termites built mounds around his body. Since these mounds are called Valmiki in Sanskrit, he was thereafter known by this name.

The Ramayana also narrates that after Lord Ram abandoned Sita, she found shelter at Maharishi Valmiki's ashram. It was here that Valmiki educated Ram's sons, Luv and Kush.
