Schools Closed On August 28: Govt Announces School Holiday, Colleges Closer Due to Heavy Rain In This Region

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has declared a school holiday for the third consecutive day on August 28 as the region continues to be battered by relentless rainfall. According to an official order issued by the Divisional Commissioner of Jammu, all schools, colleges, universities, coaching centres and training institutes will observe a school holiday in the interest of public safety.

This is not the first time such a step has been taken; the ongoing downpour has already forced back-to-back school holidays this week, leaving parents, students, and teachers waiting for conditions to improve. The administration has made it clear that the school holiday order is aimed at preventing risks to children, given the threat of floods and landslides across the region.

Offices Closed Alongside School Holiday Declaration

The school holiday is part of a larger safety measure. The government has also announced that all private and government offices will remain closed on August 28, except for essential services such as healthcare, emergency response, utilities, and law and order. By combining the school holiday with wider closures, officials hope to limit movement and keep residents safe indoors.

Weather Warnings and Flood Concerns

The Meteorological Department has predicted very heavy rainfall across the Jammu division over the next 40 hours. Rivers including the Basantar, Tawi, and Chenab have already reached the danger mark. Authorities fear that without continued school holidays and restricted travel, the risk of casualties from floods and landslides could rise dramatically.

Recruitment and Train Services Disrupted

The impact of the rain extends beyond school holidays. The constable recruitment exam, scheduled for Wednesday, has been suspended as schools were unavailable as exam centres. Train services too have collapsed under the rain fury. The Northern Railways cancelled 58 trains in Jammu and Katra and short-terminated 64 trains due to flash floods and soil erosion along the Chakki river.

Record Rainfall Triggers Prolonged School Holidays

In just 38 hours since Monday night, Jammu recorded over 360 mm of rainfall, the highest in decades. The deluge has washed away roads and bridges, inundated agricultural fields, and forced families to move to safer locations. With another school holiday declared, the administration has reinforced that public safety, especially for students, is its top priority until weather conditions stabilize.
