In Kerala, school children launch 'Rice Bucket Challenge' to help tribals

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 1: Drawing inspiration from the 'Ice Bucket Challenge' of the West, students of a city- based higher secondary school have come up with 'Rice Bucket Challenge' to help tribal communities in Kerala.

Students of Carmel Girls' Higher Secondary School have collected a total of 1,500 kilo gram rice, 220 kilo gram of red gram, 150 kilo gram of red cow peas and other essential commodities to be distributed to various tribal hamlets as part of the initiative.

The school management said the foodgrain and cereals will be distributed to hamlets of Attappady in northern district of Palakkad and Amburi and Kottur in the suburbs of the capital city with the help of women's neighbourhood network Kudumbashree.

The programme was initiated to create sense of social responsibility and commitment among children, school principal Sister Helma said in a release here today. Home Minister Ramesh Chennitha will launch the programme officially at a function in the school campus tomorrow. Kudumbashree executive director K B Valsalakumari will also be present during the occasion, it said.
