SC notice to Centre on plea challenging special status to J&K

The Supreme Court has issued issued notices to the Centre among others on a plea that challenged the special status accorded to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution.

The petitioner contended that Article 370 has lapsed and urged that the separate constitution of Jammu and Kashmir be declared illegal.

The plea comes in the midst of a debate on whether to continue granting special status to Kashmir. Both the BJP and the RSS have said that special status accorded to the troubled state of J&K must be withdrawn. Under this provision the Constitution entitles the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly to define Permanent Residents of the state
