SC Grants Bail To Delhi's Former Minister Satyendar Jain On Health Grounds

Supreme Court on Friday granted interim bail to Delhi's former minister Satyendar Jain on medical grounds for six weeks in a money laundering case.

"We are inclined to grant interim medical bail. We allow the petitioner to take treatment at private hospital and we allow him to be released on interim bail as subject to the conditions by the trial court. his order shall remain in operation till July 11, 2023," Bar & Bench quoted a vacation bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and PS Narasimha as saying.

It directed Jain not to influence the witnesses while asking him not to leave Delhi without prior permission from the court.

The apex court has asked the former Delhi minister to produce all relevant papers of treatment before it and said that the order will remain in operation till July 11.

The matter has been listed for hearing on July 10. It has also asked the AAP leader to choose any hospital of his choice for his medical treatment.

Satyendar Jain was put on oxygen support and shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the LNJP hospital after his condition worsened on Thursday, the AAP said.

He was first admitted to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital and later, shifted to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital due to breathing problems. "He collapsed due to dizziness in bathroom of Tihar Jail. Even before this, Satyendar Jain had fallen in the bathroom and had a serious spinal injury," the party had earlier said.

Based on a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the CBI on August 24, 2017, the ED initiated the investigation into the money laundering case.

The CBI alleged that Jain, while holding the office as a Minister in the Government of Delhi from February 14, 2015, to May 31, 2017, had acquired assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. He was arrested in May 2022.
