On Thursday the Central government had cleared their appointments. The notification announcing the appointment was published on the website of the Union Law Ministry's Department of Justice.

The Supreme Court's Collegium had recommended their appointment by way of a resolution on May 16.

The Collegium comprising CJI Chandrachud and Justices S K Kaul, K M Joseph, Ajay Rastogi and Rajiv Khanna took note of the fact that there was only one member from the bar directly appointed to the Supreme Court.

Viswanathan is the tenth name in the list of lawyers to be appointed as Supreme Court judge directly from the bar.

The other judges to be appointed directly from the bar were, S M Sikri, S C Roy, Kuldip Singh, Santosh Hegde, Rohinton Nariman, U U Lalit, L Nageswara Rao, Indu Malhotra and P S Narasimha.
