SC asks centre why prisoners should hang by the neck
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a petition that challenged awarding of death sentence by hanging by the neck. The SC asked the government to file its reply in three weeks.
The court sought to know if the practise of hanging to death could not stop. The condemned should die in peace and not pain. While stating so, the court directed the centre to file its reply.
This response from the Supreme Court comes, 34 years after it had upheld the validity of death sentence. Currently prisoners awarded death sentence are hanged by the neck under the provisions of Section 354 (5) of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
