Satya Pal Malik, the former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 78 after a prolonged illness. He died at 1 PM at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi, where he had been undergoing treatment.

Malik is remembered most prominently as the last Governor of the undivided state of Jammu and Kashmir, holding office during one of the most critical junctures in India's political history - the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories in 2019.

Beginning his political career in 1974, Malik rose through the ranks from student union activism to becoming a Rajya Sabha MP, a Lok Sabha MP, and later, Governor of Bihar, Goa, Meghalaya, and Jammu and Kashmir.

He came under the scanner of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after alleging that he was offered a ₹300 crore bribe during his tenure in Jammu and Kashmir. The case, tied to irregularities in awarding contracts for the Kiru hydropower project, remains under investigation.

While Satya Pal Malik's public service salary was modest - ₹3.5 lakh per month - the family's wealth and accomplishments told a different story.

Malik often joked about the disparity between his income and that of his son, Dev Kabir Malik, a well-known graphic designer who graduated from the National Institute of Design (NID). During an event in Bihar, Malik revealed, "I told my son my salary is now ₹3.5 lakh per month. He smiled and replied that he earns ₹60 lakh for a design project."

Dev is best known for designing the Bira beer logo and has worked with multiple top-tier brands. The Malik family's overall net worth, while never officially declared, is estimated to be in the ₹40-50 crore range, bolstered by investments and the successful careers of his children.

Malik's daughter-in-law is an IIT graduate, further cementing the family's reputation for academic and professional excellence. In recent days, Malik had been staying at his son's home in Delhi and had planned a meeting with Khap representatives at a nearby park - a final nod to his deep-rooted connection with grassroots politics.

Scholar, Reformer, Family Man

Born on 24 July 1946 in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, Malik came from a Jat family and was known for his rebellious streak and intellectual curiosity. He earned degrees in science and law from Meerut, and held interests in history, music, and photography. A prolific writer, he also authored several political essays and books, offering insight into his ideology and lived experiences.

Despite the political turbulence and public disputes he often found himself in, those close to Malik remember him as a family-oriented man who took great pride in his children's accomplishments and valued education, integrity, and expression.
