NDMC Unveils Major Revamp Plans for Sarojini Nagar Market and Other Key Shopping Areas in Delhi
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has announced a significant redevelopment plan for three major markets, including the well-known Sarojini Nagar Market. This initiative, part of Phase-I of an urban renewal project, was revealed by NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal. The plan aims to modernise these markets in line with the Delhi Master Plan 2021.

Sarojini Nagar Market, famous for affordable fashion, will undergo a comprehensive transformation. The current mixed-use building will be converted into a fully commercial hub. The ground, first, second, and part of the third floors will be dedicated to retail and commercial spaces. This change is expected to increase shopping space and enhance revenue potential.
Focus on Infrastructure and Modernisation
In addition to Sarojini Nagar, Aliganj Market and Malcha Marg Market are also included in the redevelopment plan. These markets will see significant infrastructure improvements such as enhanced parking facilities, smart street furniture, better horticulture, and improved public amenities. These upgrades aim to create a more comfortable environment for traders and customers.
Chahal emphasised the importance of maintaining the cultural charm of Sarojini Nagar while transforming it into a modern shopping centre. The goal is to attract more visitors and vendors while preserving its unique character. "This revamp aims to preserve the market's cultural charm while transforming it into a more organised and modern shopping centre," he stated.
Collaboration with Traders
The redevelopment plans have been shaped with input from market traders associations (MTAs). Chahal highlighted that these collaborations ensure that vendors' concerns and needs are addressed. This approach helps balance modernisation with preserving the markets' unique character.
The successful upgrade of Khanna Market served as a pilot project for this initiative. NDMC hopes to replicate this success across other key commercial hubs in New Delhi. This effort aims to boost both the local economy and quality of life for residents and visitors.
As plans progress, Sarojini Nagar's transformation is expected to elevate its status as a shopping hub. It will set a new standard for urban market spaces in the city. Chahal expressed optimism about the project's impact on New Delhi's commercial landscape.
