The victim was identified as Roop Singh Yadav. It was reported that his body was found in the driver's cabin lying in a pool of blood. Initially, the conductor Amit Pateria informed police that Yadav had been shot by an unidentified person while they were en route to Kashmiri Gate.

After deboarding passengers at Sarai Kale Khan, they were heading towards Kashmere gate when an argument broke out between Yadav and Amit over a minor issue.In a fit of rage following this dispute, Amit took out a pistol kept hidden in a box inside the driver’s cabin and fatally shot Yadav.

Amit along with Azad tried to cover up their crime by hiding the murder weapon near Yamuna River bank and concocting an elaborate story about Yadav's murder committed by an unknown assailant. However, their inconsistent accounts during questioning led to the truth being unveiled.
