Sanjay Verma Takes Charge as New Maharashtra DGP Following Rashmi Shukla's Removal
Senior IPS officer Sanjay Kumar Verma assumed the role of Maharashtra's Director General of Police on Tuesday evening. This change followed the removal of the previous DGP, Rashmi Shukla, as directed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in preparation for the upcoming assembly elections. A government order confirmed Verma's appointment, stating he will serve until the election process concludes.

Election Commission's Directive
The state is set to hold elections on November 20, with results announced on November 23. The ECI had instructed Shukla's removal after opposition parties raised concerns. The Congress party had specifically requested her transfer, alleging she was involved in phone tapping while leading the State Intelligence Department. Consequently, Shukla was placed on compulsory leave.
Earlier that day, with ECI approval, the state government selected Verma from a shortlist of three candidates. Verma, who previously served as Director General Legal and Technical, took charge at the police headquarters in Colaba, South Mumbai. He expressed gratitude to both the Election Commission and the state government for their trust in him.
Verma's New Role
Upon assuming his new position, Verma stated, "I thank the Election Commission and the state government for showing faith in me. I have taken charge of the post." He emphasised that during this period, police will adhere strictly to orders and ensure compliance with the code of conduct for the November 20 voting.
Verma plans to collaborate closely with officers to gather necessary information and oversee the election process. An official noted that Verma is scheduled to retire in April 2028. His previous experience includes leading a Special Investigation Team that investigated Govind Pansare's murder in 2015.
Transition Process
Following Shukla's removal order on Monday, Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar temporarily assumed additional responsibilities as DGP. The ECI instructed Maharashtra's chief secretary to submit a list of three IPS officers by Tuesday afternoon for consideration as the new DGP.
The panel was reviewed by the ECI, which approved Verma's appointment. Consequently, he was officially appointed by the state government as DGP. Shukla, a 1988-batch IPS officer from Maharashtra cadre, became DGP in January this year. Her tenure was extended until 2026 by the Mahayuti government despite her scheduled retirement in June.
The transition in leadership aims to ensure a smooth electoral process amid ongoing political tensions. The focus remains on maintaining law and order during this crucial period for Maharashtra's governance.
