Sanjay Nirupam Hits Back At Congress, Confirms Resignation Prior To Congress Dismissal

Sanjay Nirupam, who served as both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MP, revealed that the Congress party expelled him for six years following his submission of a resignation letter, on Thursday.

The expulsion came shortly after Nirupam criticized his party leadership during seat-sharing discussions with the Shiv Sena (UBT) for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Taking to X, Nirupam shared a screenshot of his resignation email addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, expressing his observations regarding the swift response from the party.

"Looks like immediately after the party received my resignation letter last night, they decided to issue my expulsion. Good to see such promptness. Just sharing this information."

Nirupam, a former MP from Mumbai North, faced criticism from the state leadership of Congress after the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena declared its candidates for four out of six Lok Sabha seats in Mumbai, including the Mumbai North West seat, which he was eyeing.

It was stated that the decision to unilaterally field candidates in Mumbai by Shiv Sena (UBT) was seen as allowing the destruction of Congress.

A resolution seeking Nirupam's expulsion was passed by the Maharashtra Congress and forwarded to the party's high command in Delhi. Additionally, his name was dropped from the party's list of star campaigners.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Nirupam was defeated by BJP's Gopal Shetty from the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha seat. Despite expressing interest in contesting for the Mumbai North West constituency, his plans were disrupted as Shiv Sena (UBT) presented its own candidate, further complicating the situation.
