Sandeshkhali Row: Mamata Banerjee To Visit Region For First Time Amid Political Tensions And Local Concerns
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is visiting Sandeshkhali for the first time since allegations of misconduct by local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders emerged. Her visit aims to distribute benefits under state schemes and address local concerns. "This will be a government programme," Banerjee stated, highlighting the completion of several initiatives like 'Lakshmir Bhandar' and 'Banglar Bari'. Approximately 20,000 beneficiaries are expected to gain from these schemes.
Banerjee's visit follows her commitment made before the Lok Sabha elections. She had assured locals of her visit after the elections. Meanwhile, BJP Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has planned a counter-event in the area. His programme, scheduled for the day after Banerjee's visit, includes a 'Jana Sanjog Yatra' to engage with residents and present the BJP's vision for Sandeshkhali.

Political Tensions in Sandeshkhali
The controversy in Sandeshkhali has been a political battleground between the BJP and TMC. Earlier this year, Enforcement Directorate (ED) officers faced attacks while probing a ration distribution scam linked to TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan. Following this, women accused Shahjahan and his associates of land grabbing and sexual harassment, intensifying demands for his arrest.
Despite these protests, TMC managed to retain the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat, which includes Sandeshkhali. Trinamool veteran Haji Nurul Islam defeated BJP candidate Rekha Patra by a significant margin. The BJP, CPI(M), and Congress have accused the TMC administration of shielding Shahjahan amid these allegations.
Allegations and Arrests
Mamata Banerjee has dismissed the incident as a conspiracy involving the BJP, ED, and media. However, Shahjahan was eventually arrested after a 55-day manhunt and suspended by TMC. The allegations against him have sparked significant political tension in the region.
The situation in Sandeshkhali remains tense as both parties continue their political manoeuvres. Banerjee's visit is seen as an attempt to reassure locals amidst ongoing controversies. Her focus on distributing benefits under state schemes aims to strengthen her party's position in the area.
