Samsung India Accepts Majority of Workers' Demands Amid Ongoing Union Registration Dispute in Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Nadu government announced that Samsung India Electronics has agreed to most of the workers' demands following a strike that began on September 9. The government urged employees to return to work promptly. On Tuesday night, some individuals involved in the strike were detained by police but were later released on bond by a magistrate.

Samsung India Meets Most Workers Demands

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin mentioned that the main unresolved issue is the registration of the workers' union. Samsung opposes unions with political ties, which is causing a stalemate. Discussions are ongoing to resolve this matter. Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu noted that Samsung has objected to the union's political affiliation, and the issue is currently in court.

Union Registration and Court Proceedings

The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), affiliated with CPIM, supports the workers' demand for union registration. CITU approached the court on September 30, and as the matter is sub judice, further discussions are limited. The labour department will act based on the court's decision.

Samsung has agreed to provide additional benefits to employees. From October, workers will receive an extra Rs 5,000 monthly as a special incentive. In case of an employee's death while on duty, a relief amount of Rs 1 lakh will be given. Employees will also have access to air-conditioned transport and additional leave for family events.

Legal Developments and Arrests

CITU office-bearer E Muthukumar filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court, claiming wrongful detention of seven individuals during the strike. The petitioner's counsel argued that the protest was peaceful, but police interference occurred. The Additional Public Prosecutor stated there was no illegal detention, and those arrested were released.

An FIR was filed against 36 people related to law and order concerns during the protest. Eight individuals were arrested on October 8 and later released by a judicial magistrate. They appeared before the magistrate to fulfill legal conditions. The high court confirmed that employees could strike peacefully without illegal custody.

On Wednesday, around 500 employees and some CITU supporters attempted a protest near the plant without police permission and were briefly detained before being released. Thennarasu clarified that no arrests were made by police; it was a district administration action due to lack of permission.

Industrial Dispute Resolution Efforts

Samsung's facility in Sunguvarchatram, Sriperumbudur produces consumer goods like refrigerators and televisions. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Tamil Nadu urged for a swift resolution to maintain economic momentum and Tamil Nadu's reputation. CII Tamil Nadu State Council Chairman Srivats Ram called for stakeholders to work towards an amicable solution.

Ram highlighted Tamil Nadu's success in attracting foreign investments due to proactive government policies and ease of doing business measures. He appreciated the state's efforts in fostering a supportive environment for industrial growth across various sectors.

The situation remains tense as discussions continue between Samsung, workers, and authorities. The outcome will likely impact industrial relations in Tamil Nadu significantly.
