Sambit Patra's 'Slip of Tongue' on Lord Jagannath Sparks Outrage

Recent comments made by BJP leader and Puri candidate Sambit Patra have sparked a significant controversy, leading to accusations from the Congress, BJD, and AAP of disrespecting Lord Jagannath and offending the sentiments of his devotees. Patra's remarks, which he later described as a "slip of the tongue," suggested that Lord Shri Jagannath is a devotee of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This statement has ignited a political firestorm, with demands for an apology from the Prime Minister himself.

Patras Jagannath Remark Causes Stir

The backlash was swift, with Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condemning Patra's comments and urging that religious figures should not be dragged into political debates. Amidst the uproar, Patra took to social media platform X to clarify his statement, asserting it was a misarticulation during one of his speeches following a roadshow led by Prime Minister Modi in Puri.

Opposition parties have seized upon these remarks, labeling them as an affront to Lord Jagannath. The Congress party, through its social media handle on X, criticized Patra for his "Modi Bhakti" and called for an apology from Narendra Modi for the "disgusting statement." Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi also weighed in, with Gandhi hinting at a moral decline within the BJP.

BJD leader and Odisha CM Patnaik expressed his disapproval on X, emphasizing Lord Jagannath's significance as a universal deity and condemning any attempts to portray him as a mere devotee of a human being. This sentiment was echoed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who interpreted Patra's comments as indicative of BJP leaders' arrogance.

Ajoy Kumar, Congress in-charge for Odisha, questioned the silence of certain media outlets and Hindutva organizations on this issue. The controversy has not only stirred political circles but also touched the faith and identity of countless devotees and Odias worldwide, highlighting the delicate balance between religion and politics in India.
