Sachin, Prof CNR Rao to be conferred Bharat Ratna today

New Delhi
New Delhi, Feb 4: At a function in the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the president of India Pranab Mukherjee would be conferring the country's highest civilian award to cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and scientist Prof CNR Rao.

Both the awardees have already been honoured with Padma Vibhushan, which the second highest civilian award of India. The duo would now be enlisted in the list of 41 eminent personalities who have been awarded the prestigious award for their exceptional service to the public and the country.

Master Blaster, who retired from international cricket at the age of 40, is considered the "true Ambassador of India in the world of sports and his achievements in cricket", according to an official statement. He will also be the youngest of them all to be conferred the award.

Prof Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao (79) is known for his contribution in the field of solid state and material chemistry. He has published over 1,400 research papers and published 45 books. He would be the third scientist after C V Raman and A P J Abdul Kalam to be conferred with Bharat Ratna.
