Rohith Vemula committed suicide due to personal reasons, says panel report

An inquiry commission probing the matter on Tuesday said that Hyderabad Central University research scholar Rohith Vemula did not commit suicide due to expulsion from the hostel. Though the report was leaked to the media in October last year, it was officially made public on Independence Day.

The report said that university's action against him has nothing to do with his suicide, adding that it was personal reasons that forced him to take this step.

The commission further confirms Rohith was unhappy and frustrated for the reasons which is best known to him, which led him to commit suicide.

The report also highlighted that the university did not have a proper grievance redressal mechanism, especially in the case of scholars belonging to reserved categories.

The report further indicated that the then HRD minister Smriti Irani and BJD leader Bandaru Dattareya were not responsible for the event.

The inquiry commission's report was submitted to the HRD ministry in August 2016, following the tragic suicide, which created an uproar among students in India.

The University of Hyderabad's Council in November 2015 expelled five students - all of whom were said to be Dalits - from the hostel and barred them from access to public places within the campus premises. Vermula was one of the five students who were expelled.
