RLD Leader Shahzeb Rizvi Resigns in Protest Against Party's Support for Waqf Bill

Shahzeb Rizvi, the general secretary of Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) in Uttar Pradesh, has stepped down from his position and left the party. His resignation comes in protest against the party's backing of the Waqf Amendment Bill in Parliament. The RLD is part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Shahzeb Rizvi Resigns from RLD Over Waqf Bill

Rizvi expressed his discontent with RLD national president Jayant Chaudhary's decision to support the bill. He suggested that this move might lead to more leaders leaving the party soon. Rizvi has not yet determined his next steps and plans to consult with his supporters before making any decisions.

Discontent Among Party Members

Rizvi claimed that over 2,000 RLD workers are expected to resign alongside him. He accused Chaudhary of ignoring the sentiments of Muslim voters, stating, "If the RLD has 10 MLAs in western Uttar Pradesh today, then Muslims have contributed a lot to this." He believes that Chaudhary's support for the bill is a betrayal of Muslim voters.

The Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025, was approved by Parliament early on Friday after a lengthy debate in the Rajya Sabha. The bill passed with 128 members voting in favour and 95 opposing it. In the Lok Sabha, it received support from 288 members, while 232 voted against it.

Impact on Muslim Voters

Rizvi criticised Chaudhary for deviating from the principles set by Chaudhary Charan Singh. He argued that supporting the Waqf bill goes against the rights and sentiments of Muslims. "Muslims gave a lot of votes to Jayant Chaudhary but he supported the Waqf bill," he said, expressing his disappointment with Chaudhary's decision.

The controversy surrounding the Waqf Amendment Bill highlights tensions within political alliances and raises questions about leadership decisions impacting voter bases. Rizvi's resignation underscores these challenges as parties navigate complex legislative landscapes.
