Odisha Grapples With Soaring Potato Prices Amid Supply Constraints

The price of potatoes in Odisha remains high, fluctuating between Rs. 45 and Rs. 50 per kg after a brief dip around Rs. 35 per kg. This persistent increase is straining consumers' budgets as potatoes are a staple in many households. Despite negotiations, prices have not decreased.

In Cuttack's Chattrabazaar, the primary vegetable market and storage area, three kilograms of potatoes now cost Rs. 150. Retail prices range from Rs. 45 to Rs. 50 per kg. If this trend continues, both the crisis and prices are expected to worsen.

Impact of West Bengal Cold Storage Strike

Odisha heavily relies on West Bengal for its potato supply. However, a strike by cold storage owners in West Bengal has led to a potato shortage in Odisha. Consequently, the price of a sack of potatoes has surged from Rs. 300 to Rs. 500.

State Food Suppliers and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra announced on August 1 that Odisha will gradually stop importing potatoes from West Bengal. After meeting with traders' associations at the Secretariat, Patra stated that this decision was due to the prolonged scarcity caused by West Bengal halting potato shipments.

Alternative Potato Supply from Uttar Pradesh

The state government has decided to source potatoes from Uttar Pradesh (UP) instead. Initially, traders have been permitted to import 20 trucks of potatoes from UP. Patra mentioned that the price of these imported potatoes would be comparable to those from West Bengal.

The ongoing shortage has driven up potato prices in Odisha markets, with current rates exceeding Rs. 40 per kg. The situation remains challenging for consumers who rely on this essential vegetable.

Efforts are being made to stabilize the supply and control prices by diversifying sources and reducing dependency on a single state.
