New Delhi, Nov 26: There is a steady increase in the number of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) in teenagers and children in India, said an India Today report. And the doctors attribute it to increase in child abuse and absence of sexual health programmes in schools.

The report said that the central government-run Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) in the national capital alone has registered a rise in STD cases among children over the past four years.

As per a study conducted by doctors Vibhu Mendiratta, Soumya Agarwal and Ram Chander of the LHMC's dermatology department on STD patients below 19 years of age, it was found that sexually transmitted diseases cases had jumped from one to 4.9 per cent over the past four years. The diseases range from Viral and Bacterial STIs, HIV, molluscum contagiosum, Cyanea acuminate, herpes genitalis to secondary syphilis, the report said.

Voluntary sexual activity and sexual abuse are the main modes of transmission in children nearing puberty, the doctors said.

The doctors studied at least 1,140 cases. The study also said that only seventy-five per cent patients had used prevention contraceptives during their last sexual intercourse.

Of the patients, three boys had indulged in sexual activity with commercial sex workers whereas a girl was pushed into prostitution at an early age.

Addiction to sex was found in seven boys, of them three were smokers, three alcoholics and one, tobacco chewer. Three girls and one boy said they were sexually abused - two of them were abused by strangers, one by a neighbour and the other by friends, said the doctors.

In the sexual abuse cases, the doctors found out that girls were more affected than boys.
