RG Kar Medical College Rape Case: A Timeline

Here is a timeline of the events that have unfolded since that fateful day, reflecting the anger, demands for justice, and the legal and political battles that followed:

August 9, 2024: The Discovery of a Tragedy

On the morning of August 9, 2024, the lifeless body of a 31-year-old junior doctor was found in a seminar hall on the fourth floor of RG Kar Medical College. Her body showed 16 external and nine internal injuries, and postmortem reports confirmed death by manual strangulation following sexual assault. The police quickly arrested Sanjay Roy, a 28-year-old traffic police volunteer, on August 10, 2024, for the gruesome crime.

The Nation Reacts: Protests Erupt Nationwide

The discovery of the crime led to widespread shock, which quickly turned into anger and frustration. Protests erupted in Kolkata and across India, with doctors, medical students, and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) leading the charge. They demanded justice for their colleague and enhanced safety measures for healthcare professionals.

The growing protests led to administrative changes. On August 11, the West Bengal government transferred the hospital's Superintendent. But this did little to quell the unrest. On August 12, the hospital's principal, Sandip Ghosh, stepped down in the face of mounting pressure.

The Demand for a Fair Investigation: CBI Takes Over

As protests escalated, the victim's parents filed a petition before the Calcutta High Court on August 13, seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, citing a lack of faith in the Kolkata Police. The High Court granted their request, and the investigation was transferred to the CBI. This decision was a turning point in the case, as it signaled the beginning of a wider movement for justice.

Protests and Rallies Gain Momentum

The protests became more intense as medical professionals and activists took to the streets in solidarity with the victim. The 'Reclaim the Night' rallies, organized on August 15, 2024, saw women and activists demand justice for women's safety. In Kolkata, however, tensions escalated when protesters vandalized the hospital and the crime scene. The National Commission for Women (NCW) raised alarms about security lapses at the crime scene and the premature renovation of the site.

A Series of Events: Strikes, Raids, and Investigations

The protests continued throughout August, with the IMA calling for a nationwide strike on August 17 in solidarity with the victim. On August 20, the Supreme Court took notice and formed a 10-member task force to address the safety of healthcare professionals. By the end of the month, political movements, including a state-wide strike called by the BJP, led to clashes between police and protesters.

Amid the turmoil, the CBI raided the homes of hospital officials, including Sandip Ghosh. By mid-September, Ghosh was arrested on charges of evidence tampering. Police officer Abhijit Mondal, accused of delaying the filing of the FIR, was also detained.

Court Hearings, Charges, and Bail

In November 2024, Sanjay Roy, the accused, was formally charged with rape and murder under the Indian Penal Code. However, the case took another blow in December when the court granted bail to Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal due to the CBI's failure to file chargesheets within the stipulated 90-day period. The victim's parents, disappointed by the legal setback, appealed to the Calcutta High Court, demanding a fresh inquiry into the case.

January 2025: Awaiting a Verdict

The final hearing in the case concluded on January 16, 2025, and the much-awaited verdict is set to be delivered today. As the nation awaits the outcome, many see this case as symbolic of the larger fight for justice and safety for all healthcare professionals, particularly women. In the words of one protesting doctor: "This isn't just about her. This is about all of us."

The RG Kar case continues to spark debates on justice, security, and the fight for equality, with many holding their breath as the court prepares to render its decision.
