RG Kar Hospital Victim's Parents Criticise Chief Minister Banerjee Amid TMC Attacks

Senior Trinamool Congress MLAs have continued to criticise the parents of the RG Kar hospital rape-murder victim. They accuse them of echoing opposition CPIM's criticisms of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The parents had earlier stated that Banerjee, as CM, should take responsibility for the alleged police and hospital attempts to destroy evidence in their daughter's case.

Following a court's life sentence for the convict in the RG Kar hospital case, the parents demanded Banerjee's resignation. They argued that she should not remain in office given her failure to prevent evidence tampering. This has led to backlash from TMC leaders who have been vocal against the parents' statements.

Political Allegations and Reactions

Madan Mitra, TMC MLA from Kamarhati, questioned if the parents were repeating CPIM and BJP lines for political gain. He suggested they might be seeking compensation and accused them of frequently changing their statements. Mitra also alleged that substantial funds were raised under the guise of supporting the doctors' movement related to the RG Kar hospital incident.

He further speculated whether the parents intended to enter politics, warning them of likely defeat if they did. Mitra remarked, "Your new friends Ram-Bam BJP and Left parties won't be able to pull you through." BJP and CPIM leaders condemned these remarks as disrespectful towards the victim's family.

TMC Leaders' Criticism

Agriculture Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay criticised the parents for making comments unrelated to the investigation. He expressed sympathy for their loss but accused them of targeting Banerjee despite her efforts for a swift trial. Chattopadhyay claimed they were promoting CPIM's agenda against Banerjee.

Firhad Hakim, Municipal Affairs Minister and Kolkata Mayor, along with party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, also criticised the parents. They alleged opposition manipulation, which the parents denied. Veteran TMC MPs Sougata Roy and Kalyan Bandyopadhyay urged the parents to refrain from unhelpful statements.

Diverse Opinions Within TMC

In contrast, TMC MLA Humayun Kabir empathised with the parents' distress and advised against personal attacks on them. Meanwhile, BJP leader Dilip Ghosh condemned TMC leaders like Mitra and Ghosh for their harsh words towards the victim's family.

Senior CPIM leader Bikash Bhattacharya echoed this sentiment, stating that such comments reflect TMC's disregard for public sentiment in Bengal and women's concerns. The father of the victim refuted claims of being influenced by any political group, emphasising their sole desire for justice for their daughter.

The tragic incident occurred when the 31-year-old post-graduate trainee was found dead in a semi-naked state at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 last year. The family continues to seek justice amidst ongoing political tensions surrounding their case.
