Retail Inflation Jumps To 5.49% In September
Retail inflation in India jumped to 5.49% in September 2024, mainly due to adverse weather and a high base effect. This was a noticeable rise from the 3.65% recorded in August 2024 and 3.54% in July 2024. The rural inflation rate was higher at 5.87%, while urban areas experienced a rate of 5.05%, highlighting different cost pressures across regions.
Food Price Surge
Food prices saw an even more significant increase, with the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) showing a year-on-year inflation rate of 9.24%. Rural areas faced food inflation of 9.08%, whereas urban areas experienced an even sharper rise at 9.56%. This surge indicates increased pressure on essential commodities, affecting household expenses significantly.

Housing and Electricity Inflation
In addition to food prices, other sectors also experienced inflationary changes. Housing inflation for September 2024 was at 2.78%, slightly up from August's 2.66%. It's important to note that this index is calculated only for urban areas. The All India Electricity index for September was reported at 162.5, with corresponding inflation at 5.45%, up from August's index of 162.4 and an inflation rate of 4.91%.
Despite these increases, some subgroups saw a decline in inflation during September, offering relief in certain categories such as pulses and products, spices, meat & fish, and sugar & confectionery.
The overall rise in retail inflation reflects varied cost pressures across different regions and sectors, impacting consumers differently based on their location and consumption patterns.
