Indias Periodical Landscape Thrives: Over 1.48 Lakh Publications Registered

India has witnessed an impressive surge in the number of periodicals, with over 1.48 lakh publications registered as of March 2023. This growth underscores the enduring strength of print media in the face of digital advancements.

India has experienced substantial growth in the number of periodicals, with over 1.48 lakh publications registered in the country as of March 31, 2023. This information was revealed in an annual report released by Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur in New Delhi on Thursday.

Growth Across Various Languages

The majority of periodicals were registered in English and other languages listed in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution. However, a significant number were also registered in 189 other languages or dialects and a few foreign languages. The report titled "Press in India 2022-23" highlighted that as of March 31, 2023, 1,48,363 print periodicals had been registered in India.

Print Media's Resilience

Despite the proliferation of audio-visual and digital media, the rise in registered periodicals suggests that print media continues to thrive in India. The report acknowledges that print media empowers citizens, enables informed decision-making, and encourages active participation in democratic processes and nation-building.

Adapting to Technological Changes

The report also emphasizes the print media's ability to adapt to the challenges posed by evolving information and communication technologies. It notes a growing inclination towards regional language periodicals, prompting such publications to expand their reach by launching editions in cities with significant populations speaking those languages.

Growth in Dailies

As per the annual statements received from publishers for 2022-23, the number of dailies published in India stood at 10,152, compared to 10,038 during 2021-22. The claimed circulation of dailies also increased from 22,57,26,209 to 23,22,92,405 copies per publishing day, indicating a rise of 2.91 percent.

Language-wise Breakdown of Dailies

Hindi emerged as the dominant language for dailies, with 4,496 publications and a combined circulation of over 10.79 crore copies. Urdu followed with 1,123 dailies and a circulation of over 2.02 crore copies. Telugu had 1,078 dailies with a combined circulation of over 1.38 crore, while English dailies numbered 811 with a total circulation of over 2.27 crore copies per publishing day.

Periodicals by Language

In terms of periodicals, Hindi again led the way with 16,782 publications, followed by Marathi with 2,753, English with 2,443, Telugu with 2,279, Gujarati with 2,019, Urdu with 1,705, Kannada with 1,336, Tamil with 874, Bengali with 536, Odia with 426, and Malayalam with 340.

Circulation Statistics

Hindi periodicals maintained their dominance in circulation, accounting for 19,96,36,883 copies. English periodicals followed with 3,93,11,277 copies, Marathi with 3,66,90,734 copies, Urdu with 2,46,78,971 copies, Telugu with 2,13,05,637 copies, Gujarati with 1,71,57,174 copies, and Malayalam with 1,08,34,051 copies.

The growth of print media in India reflects the continued importance of newspapers and periodicals in informing and engaging citizens. Despite the rise of digital media, print publications continue to play a vital role in shaping public discourse and empowering individuals to participate actively in society.
