Gokhale Bridge in Mumbai Partially Reopens After Reconstruction
The Gokhale bridge in Mumbai, which had been closed for vehicular traffic since November 2022 due to its dilapidated condition, has partially reopened after reconstruction. Two of the four lanes of the reconstructed bridge have been opened for light motor vehicles, marking a significant step in improving connectivity in the city.
In a significant development for Mumbai's infrastructure, a portion of the reconstructed Gokhale bridge over the railway tracks at Andheri station in western Mumbai was opened for traffic on Monday evening. The bridge, which had been shut for vehicular traffic since November 7, 2022, due to its dilapidated condition, has undergone a remarkable transformation.

Engineering Marvel: A First-of-its-Kind Bridge
The reconstructed Gokhale bridge stands as an engineering marvel, showcasing India's advancements in infrastructure. For the first time in the country, a groundbreaking 1300 MT girder bridge was installed over one of the busiest railway tracks using sliding technology. This innovative approach allowed the bridge to be lowered by seven meters without disrupting the critical railway services below.
Setting New Benchmarks in Infrastructure
The Gokhale bridge has set a new benchmark for infrastructure projects in Mumbai. Completed in just 14 months from inception, it demonstrates the city's commitment to efficient and timely project execution. This achievement is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the various stakeholders involved.
Inauguration and Ongoing Developments
The bridge was officially opened for traffic in the presence of Mumbai suburban district guardian minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, and other dignitaries. While two of the four lanes of the reconstructed bridge have been opened for light motor vehicles, the second girder of the four-lane bridge is yet to be launched. The second phase of the bridge is expected to be completed by December 2024.
Addressing Height Mismatch
The BMC has acknowledged the issue of height mismatch with the DC Barfiwala bridge adjacent to the Gokhale bridge. To effectively resolve this challenge, the civic body has appointed consultants from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI). Solutions and ramp completion are anticipated by December 2024, coinciding with the completion of the bridge's second phase.
The reopening of the Gokhale bridge marks a significant milestone in Mumbai's infrastructure development. By embracing innovative engineering techniques and setting new standards for project execution, the city is paving the way for a more efficient and modern transportation network. The Gokhale bridge stands as a symbol of Mumbai's commitment to progress and its unwavering dedication to improving the lives of its citizens.
