Ready to sacrifice life, won't allow division in society: Mamata on Eid

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday took a swipe at the BJP, accusing the saffron party of dividing the society and said that she wants peace in Bengal .

Addressing a gathering for Eid-ul-Fitr namaz in Kolkata, the West Bengal CM, without taking names, said some people are trying to divide the society by pursuing politics of hate. She also sent her message to people that she is ready to give her life but "will not allow a division of the country".

"We want peace in Bengal. We don't want riots. We want peace. We don't want divisions in the country. Some people are trying to divide the country and practise politics of hate ... I am ready to give my life but will not allow any division of the country," Hindustan Times quoted Banerjee as saying.

She also urged people to unite and ensure that the BJP is defeated in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The CM said that "she will not allow implementation of NRC in West Bengal."

From the day one, the TMC has been firm on her stand on the National Register of Citizens and the citizen's amendment act.

"I am ready to fight the money power (of her political opponents), and (central) agencies (which her party alleges has been unleashed on TMC with a political motive), but I will not bow my head," she said.

"In one year's time, elections will be held to decide who will come to power in our country. Let us promise that we will unite and fight against divisive forces. We must ensure that all of us together vote them out in the next polls. If we fail to protect democracy, then everything will be finished," she claimed.

However, her statement comes after the Ram Navami violence in Bengal a few weeks ago. While the BJP has accused the Banerjee's government of turning blind eye on the attack on the Hindus, the ruling party has accused the saffron party of engineering violence.
