Ratan Tata Dies at 86: Remembering His Legacy and Contributions to India
Ratan Tata, the esteemed former chairman of Tata Group, passed away in a Mumbai hospital on Wednesday night. The 86-year-old industrialist, who played a pivotal role in elevating the salt-to-software conglomerate, died at Breach Candy Hospital at 11:30 pm. He had been hospitalised for several days before his passing, according to a senior police official.

In a heartfelt statement, Tata's family expressed gratitude for the widespread admiration and respect shown towards him. "We, his brothers, sisters, and family take solace and comfort in the outpouring of love and respect from all who admired him. While he is no longer with us in person, his legacy of humility, generosity and purpose will continue to inspire future generations," they shared.
Tributes Pour In for Ratan Tata
Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran expressed deep sorrow over Tata's demise. "It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation," he stated. Chandrasekaran also described Tata as more than just a chairperson, calling him a mentor and friend.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media platform X to express his condolences. He described Tata as a visionary business leader and an extraordinary human being. "Shri Ratan Tata Ji was a visionary business leader, a compassionate soul and an extraordinary human being. He provided stable leadership to one of India's oldest and most prestigious business houses," Modi said.
Legacy of Leadership and Philanthropy
Nitin Gadkari, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, expressed shock at Tata's passing. He referred to him as a great son of the soil and mentioned their close family ties spanning three decades. Gadkari shared his sentiments on X, highlighting the personal connection he had with Tata.
Chandrasekaran highlighted Tata's commitment to excellence and integrity during his tenure at the Tata Group. Under his leadership, the group expanded globally while maintaining its ethical principles. "With an unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and innovation, the Tata Group under his stewardship expanded its global footprint while always remaining true to its moral compass," Chandrasekaran added.
Impact Beyond Business
Tata's philanthropic efforts have left a lasting impact on society. His initiatives in education and healthcare have benefited countless individuals. Chandrasekaran noted that Tata's genuine humility was evident in every interaction he had with people. "Mr Tata's dedication to philanthropy and the development of society has touched the lives of millions," he said.
RPG Enterprises Chairman Harsh Goenka also paid tribute on X, describing Tata as a beacon of integrity and ethical leadership. "The clock has stopped ticking. The Titan passes away. #RatanTata was a beacon of integrity, ethical leadership and philanthropy, who has imprinted an indelible mark on the world of business and beyond," Goenka wrote.
Earlier in the week, reports emerged about Tata's hospitalisation for age-related health check-ups. Despite concerns about his health, he reassured everyone that there was no cause for alarm regarding his condition.
