Ratan Tata, Influential Former Chairman of Tata Group, Dies at Age 86
Ratan Naval Tata, the former chairman of the Tata Group, has passed away at 86. He died at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday night. Tata, who led the conglomerate for over two decades, was in intensive care since Monday. His death was first reported by a senior Mumbai police official and later confirmed by Tata Group chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran.

Chandrasekaran described Tata as an exceptional leader whose contributions significantly impacted both the Tata Group and India. "It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation," he stated.
Legacy of Leadership and Expansion
Ratan Tata's leadership saw the Tata Group expand globally, acquiring notable British companies like Corus and Jaguar Land Rover. The conglomerate now operates in diverse sectors, from coffee to cars and software to steel. Recently, it ventured into chip manufacturing and plans to set up an iPhone assembly plant, achieving USD 165 billion in revenue last fiscal year.
Tata's journey began after his education at Cornell University. Returning to India in 1962, he worked on the shop floor of the family business. By 1971, he became director in charge of National Radio and Electronics Co., and a decade later, he was appointed chairman of Tata Industries. In 1991, he succeeded his uncle JRD as chairman of the Tata Group.
Philanthropy and Personal Tributes
Tata's philanthropic efforts left a lasting impact on education and healthcare. His humility was evident in personal interactions, inspiring many. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised him as a visionary leader with a compassionate heart. "He provided stable leadership to one of India's oldest and most prestigious business houses," Modi noted.
Modi shared memories of meeting Tata during his tenure as Gujarat's Chief Minister. "My mind is filled with countless interactions with Shri Ratan Tata Ji," he said. Modi expressed deep sorrow over Tata's passing and extended condolences to his family and admirers.
Industry Reactions
Industrialists mourned Tata's death, recognising his influence on India's business landscape. Mukesh Ambani expressed personal grief, calling it a significant loss for India Inc. "At a personal level, the passing of Ratan Tata has filled me with immense grief as I lost a dear friend," Ambani stated.
Gautam Adani highlighted Tata's role in shaping modern India, describing him as a giant who embodied integrity and compassion. Anand Mahindra noted that India's economy stands poised for growth due to Tata's contributions. "With him gone, all we can do is commit to emulating his example," Mahindra said.
A Lasting Impact
Sundar Pichai recalled their last meeting discussing Waymo's progress, acknowledging Tata's legacy in business and philanthropy. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari expressed shock at losing such an influential figure. Harsh Goenka described him as a beacon of ethical leadership.
PETA India remembered Tata for his compassion towards animals, noting his influence on community care for dogs. The Tata Trusts Small Animal Hospital in Mumbai stands as a testament to his enduring legacy in animal welfare.
Earlier reports indicated that Ratan Tata was hospitalised for routine check-ups related to age-related conditions. Despite concerns about his health, he reassured there was no cause for alarm.
