One man rapes, the other heals: Father carries minor daughter for 4 kilometers for treatment

Jharkhand, Aug 29: In a land where giving birth to a girl is considered a burden, this labourer carries her minor daughter for 4 kilometers everyday to get her treated for the scars induced by another man.

A daily wage labourer in Jharkhand walks four kilometers to the nearest healthcare centre, carrying her minor daughter for treatment everyday.

He cannot afford a cycle, but he never misses an appointment to dress the wounds of his 9-year old daughter who was brutally raped by a local driver 2 months ago. Her intestine was left ruptured after the incident. Profusely bleeding and unable to stand or walk, the girl crawled to her home about a kilometer away and narrated the ordeal to her parents.

She was immediately admitted to a local hospital where her condition worsened and she had to be rushed to nearby Jamshedpur for better treatment. Then she was referred to the Ranchi hospital when the doctors could not stop her bleeding. She had to undergo a critical colectomy surgery in Ranchi and she carries a colostomy bag now. Although the doctors were successful in checking the bleeding, she has to be treated for her wounds everyday.

The man, however, shows no remorse. He says,"So what if I do not have a cycle or a motorbike? She is my baby, I cannot dump her. I want her to recover at the earliest and for that I have to take her to the doctor every day."Even though the treatment is taking a financial toll on his family, they are selling the livestock and other assets to buy the girl gifts and dresses so that the daughter stays happy.

"I am unable to go for work as this is a priority. We have exhausted whatever in the name of savings we had. Rather we are deep in debt now. God knows how many more days we will have to suffer like this. I wish a doctor could come to my home and dress the wounds of my daughter but that's a dream for us," said the man. The young girl identified the man who raped her after police nabbed him while trying to rape another minor.

Meanwhile Ghatshila sub-divisional officer B P Singh said that he would do everything to help the girl.
