Ramakrishna Mission Mourns the Loss of President Swami Smaranananda
Kolkata, March 26 witnessed the passing of Swami Smaranananda, the esteemed 16th president of the Ramakrishna Mission, at the age of 94. His demise was attributed to age-related ailments, as confirmed by the medical team attending to him. The Ramakrishna Mission, established by Swami Vivekananda, announced that Srimat Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj attained Mahasamadhi on Tuesday night at 8.14 pm.

Swami Smaranananda was admitted to the Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan in Kolkata on January 29 due to a urinary tract infection. His condition later escalated to respiratory failure, necessitating ventilator support from March 3. The nation mourns the loss of a revered spiritual leader, with tributes pouring in from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences through a post on X, highlighting the profound impact Swami Smaranananda had on many. "He left an indelible mark on countless hearts and minds. His compassion and wisdom will continue to inspire generations," PM Modi remarked. He also shared personal memories of his interactions with the monk, including a visit to Belur Math in 2020 and a recent visit to the hospital to enquire about his health.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also paid homage to Swami Smaranananda, recognizing his spiritual leadership and the comfort he provided to millions worldwide. "This great monk during his lifetime has given spiritual leadership to the world order of the Ramakrishnaites and remains the source of solace for millions of devotees across the globe," she stated.
Final Rites
The Ramakrishna Mission has announced that the cremation of Swami Smaranananda will be held at its headquarters, Belur Math in Howrah, at 9 pm on Wednesday. In honor of the revered president, Belur Math's gates will be open throughout the night of the 26th and during the 27th until the completion of the last rites. This gesture allows devotees and followers to pay their final respects to a spiritual guide who touched many lives through his teachings and compassion.
The passing of Swami Smaranananda marks the end of an era for the Ramakrishna Mission and its followers worldwide. His life's work and spiritual guidance have left a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire future generations in their quest for peace and enlightenment.
