Ram Rahim convicted: How this family endured torture till justice was done

By Vicky

For the family of the rape victim Friday August 25 2017 will be a memorable day. Justice was delayed, but not denied and the Special CBI court at Panchkula convicted Dera chief, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh on charges of rape.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh

The family of the victim had spent years dedicating their lives to the Dera chief. The brother of the victim was an insider at the Dera Sacha ashram. The father of the victim was a devotee and had constructed a special room in his house for Ram Rahim. The guru would stop over at their home and stay at the room specially built for him.

However everything changed horrifically for this family. The girl of the family had been raped by the very 'guru' they so ardently followed. The brother quit the ashram after learning about the rape of the two girls one of which was his sister.

There was no question of complaining as the Dera chief and his followers were powerful and dangerous.

What blew the lid of Ram Rahim was the anonymous letter that circulated detailing the rape incident. It was published by a newspaper called Poora Sach and this even cost the editor's life. He was shot dead at his home at point blank range.

Once the letter was out, the Dera followers suspected that it was the brother's doing. Many Dera followers repeatedly visited his home and threatened him. Sadly he was murdered two months later.

For this family the first round of the battle has been won. Their prayers have been answered. However the battle still remains as there are two more appellate courts in which this battle would be fought- The High Court and then the Supreme Court.
