Raja Raghuvanshi Murder Mystery: Meghalaya Police Recreate Killing With Sonam And Raj

In a major development in the murder of 29-year-old Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, Meghalaya Police on Tuesday recreated the crime scene in Sohra (Cherrapunji), where Raja was allegedly hacked to death on May 23 while honeymooning in the scenic East Khasi Hills. His wife Sonam, her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha, and three contract killers have been arrested in connection with the crime.

As part of the investigation, all five accused including Sonam and Raj were brought to the crime scene for a detailed reconstruction of events. The police first led them to a hilltop parking area, suspected to be the place where the murder conspiracy was executed. The group was then taken to the precise location near Weisawdong Falls, where Raja was reportedly killed. The recreation began after they were escorted out of the Sadar police station around 9:30 am.

The investigation is currently being handled by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is examining every possible angle in the case. Meghalaya's Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang said on Monday that the murder plot appeared highly unusual, especially given the short time - barely days - between Sonam's marriage and her alleged involvement in her husband's murder.

"We are probing whether more elements are involved in this conspiracy," Nongrang told PTI. "There is sufficient evidence and our investigators are working to tie up all loose ends." According to officials, the SIT has also sought support from Assam Police and other states where the accused had traveled before and after the killing.

Raja and Sonam had tied the knot in Indore on May 11 and arrived in Meghalaya via Guwahati on May 20 for their honeymoon. On May 23, both of them vanished after checking out of a homestay in Nongriat village. Raja's body was later discovered at the bottom of a gorge near Weisawdong Falls on June 2. A manhunt was launched for Sonam, who eventually surfaced over 1200 km away in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur on June 9, where she surrendered to police.

Investigations have revealed that the conspiracy to murder Raja was planned in Indore just days before the wedding. Raj Kushwaha, 20, is believed to be the mastermind while Sonam, 25, agreed to help carry out the plan. Both have been arrested along with the three hired killers. A court in Shillong has sent all five accused to eight days of police custody for further interrogation.

The brutal crime, disguised under the pretext of a honeymoon, has shocked the nation and raised serious questions about premeditated violence and betrayal. The SIT continues to dig deeper into what now appears to be a cold-blooded well-orchestrated murder.
