Delhi's rapidly shifting February weather has left residents surprised once again. After a brief cold spell early in the month and sudden heatwave-like conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) now predicts rain and strong winds in the capital over the next 24 to 48 hours, hinting at another sharp change.

Sudden Weather Swing In Delhi

On February 17, Delhi recorded its highest temperature of the year so far at 30.9°C, about 6.5 degrees above normal, while the minimum stood at 12.4°C. Bright sunshine and rising heat made conditions feel unusually warm for February.

However, the IMD now forecasts light rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning for February 18 afternoon. Winds may reach speeds of 30-40 kmph, bringing temporary relief from the heat before temperatures begin rising again.

Western Disturbance Triggers Nationwide Change

The changing weather pattern is linked to an active western disturbance affecting north and central India. Cloud cover has increased in several states, and weather officials warn of sudden rain, strong winds and even hailstorms in some regions.

Snowfall is also expected in hill states over the next two days. Daytime sunshine across plains is pushing temperatures higher, while unstable conditions are setting the stage for abrupt weather events.

Delhi-NCR Forecast And AQI Update

In Delhi-NCR, temperature fluctuations are expected to continue. Between February 19 and 23, maximum temperatures may hover between 27°C and 31°C, while minimum temperatures are likely to remain between 13°C and 15°C.

Air quality remains a concern. As of February 17 evening, Delhi's average AQI stood at 249, falling in the 'poor' category. Several monitoring stations recorded 'very poor' levels, indicating that changing weather and winds may influence pollution levels in the coming days.
