Indian Railways Renews MoU with Switzerland to Enhance Technical Cooperation and Infrastructure Development
The Indian Railways has renewed its memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Switzerland's Federal Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC). This agreement aims to boost technical cooperation between the two countries. The renewal was conducted via video conferencing and received approval from both the Railways and External Affairs ministries.

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that this MoU will provide a robust framework for collaboration. It will focus on areas like technology sharing, track maintenance, management, and construction. The initiative aligns with the government's goal to modernise the Indian Railways.
Swiss Expertise in Railway Technology
Albert Roesti, Federal Councillor and Head of DETEC, stated that Switzerland's advanced railway technology will enhance India's rail operations. This includes improvements in operational efficiency, safety standards, service quality, and infrastructure development. The collaboration is expected to significantly benefit both passenger and freight services in India.
The original MoU was signed on August 31, 2017, with a five-year validity. It concentrated on key areas such as traction rolling stock, Electric Multiple Units (EMU), train sets, freight and passenger cars, and tilting trains. This partnership aims to improve the efficiency and reliability of railway services across India.
Contributions from Swiss Companies
Swiss companies are set to play a crucial role by supplying machinery, materials, and tunneling consultancy services. These contributions are expected to enhance the overall infrastructure and operational capabilities of Indian Railways. The renewed MoU signifies a continued commitment to leveraging Swiss expertise for India's railway modernisation efforts.
The collaboration between India and Switzerland is poised to bring significant advancements to Indian Railways. By focusing on technology sharing and infrastructure development, the partnership aims to deliver better services for passengers and freight operations alike.
