Railway Staff Given Three-Month Window To Choose Unified Pension Scheme: Ministry Issues Directive
In a recent instruction, the Railway Ministry directed all 17 zone railroads to promptly and effectively inform their employees about the options available under the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS). In a circular dated May 21, the ministry emphasised the necessity of clear and proactive communication in ensuring that railway personnel are aware of their rights and choices.
The ministry's communication, addressed to Principal Chief Personnel Officers across zones, stressed that timely and comprehensive dissemination of information is essential. It also underlined the need to actively support employees in making decisions regarding their pension preferences.

To facilitate this process, the ministry has ordered the establishment of facilitation camps across various locations. These camps are to be manned by teams comprising human resources officials, finance department representatives, and subject matter experts. The objective is to guide employees through the available pension options, resolve their queries, and assist with the registration process.
Furthermore, the government has directed that complete records be kept at each assistance camp. This involves tracking the dates and locations of the camps, the number of participants, and how many employees completed their pension registration during these sessions.
The Unified Pension Scheme, introduced by the Union Government, offers a guaranteed pension and is available to both newly recruited employees and existing staff who wish to opt out of the National Pension System (NPS).
As per the guidelines, employees eligible to switch to the UPS must exercise their option within three months starting from April 1, 2025, unless the Central Government announces an extension.
With this initiative, the ministry aims to ensure that all eligible railway employees have sufficient clarity and support to make informed decisions about their retirement security.
