Railway Ministry Approves Final Survey for Doubling Jammu-Katra Railway Line to Enhance Connectivity
The Railway Ministry has sanctioned a crucial survey to double the railway line spanning 77.96 km between Jammu and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. This move aims to enhance connectivity and ease travel for pilgrims, officials announced on Wednesday.

Currently, Jammu and Katra are linked by a single line through Udhampur, which limits rail traffic and the introduction of new trains. The project is expected to address these constraints by increasing the line's capacity.
Focus on Connectivity and Infrastructure
The Northern Railway has been tasked with implementing this project. The estimated cost for the survey stands at Rs 12,59,17,363. This survey will pave the way for constructing the future railway line, according to Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railway.
Upadhyay stated, "This initiative will not only promote pilgrimage and tourism but will also contribute to the economic development and progress of the Jammu region." The project underscores Indian Railways' commitment to expanding its network in strategically significant areas.
Strategic Importance of the Project
The doubling of this railway line is expected to significantly ease travel for devotees visiting the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. It highlights Indian Railways' efforts to modernise its infrastructure in key regions.
Officials noted that after opening the Katra-Srinagar rail line, connectivity from Katra to other parts of India has become vital. The anticipated rise in visitors necessitates improved rail infrastructure.
Positive Response from Locals and Tourists
The Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat train has been well-received by both locals and tourists. Thus, approving the final location survey is seen as a timely decision by the Railway Ministry.
A senior railway official remarked that doubling the rail line between Jammu and Katra is a much-needed step. This strategic project reflects Indian Railways' dedication to enhancing access to important destinations and strengthening infrastructure.
The initiative not only aims to boost pilgrimage and tourism but also seeks to foster economic growth in the Jammu region. By addressing current limitations, it promises improved connectivity for future travellers.
