Bihar-based Sherghati Gang Busted: Raigarh Police Solve Rs 5.62 Crore Bank Heist

Five members of the notorious Bihar-based Sherghati gang were arrested by Raigarh police in Chhattisgarh for their involvement in a bank robbery amounting to Rs 5.62 crore. The entire looted booty along with weapons and vehicles used in the crime were recovered.

The Raigarh police force in Chhattisgarh, India made a significant breakthrough on Wednesday when they arrested five members of the Bihar-based Sherghati gang. The arrest led to the resolution of a high-profile robbery case involving Rs 5.62 crore that had occurred at a leading private bank's branch in the city just one day prior. The robbers were apprehended from Balrampur district and subsequently transferred back to Raigarh.

The individuals taken into custody have been identified as Rakesh Kumar Gupta (22), Rahul Kumar Singh (22), Amarjeet Kumar (24), Pankaj Kumar Mahto alias Rajesh Das alias Nishant (32) and Upendra Singh (50). All five men hail from Bihar, according to Bilaspur Range Inspector General of Police Ajay Kumar Yadav. It is noteworthy that two among them - Amarjeet Kumar and Mahto - have previously been implicated in various criminal activities including theft, abduction, and looting cases within Bihar itself. The remaining three suspects also reportedly have records for similar crimes committed across several other states.

Recovery of Looted Goods

In addition to making these arrests, police forces successfully recovered all items stolen during the robbery. This included Rs 4.19 crore in cash along with mortgaged gold ornaments weighing 2.9kg valued at approximately Rs 1.43 crore. Additionally, an assortment of tools used during their criminal pursuits such as a country-made rifle, pistol, motorcycle, car and truck were seized by authorities alongside face masks and multiple keys used during their illicit operations.

Inspector General Yadav stated that efforts are currently ongoing to identify any additional criminals who may have played a part in this crime.
