New Delhi, March 22: This is probably for the first time when a Congress leader has openly asked party vice president Rahul Gandhi to relinquish his responsibility as the party head and make way for someone more 'efficient'.

In a Facebook post, a Congress leader from Kerala has asked Rahul to make way for others if he does not want to lead the party. Although, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul's mother, is the party president, currently Rahul is leading the party in all matters.

"Respected Rahul Gandhi, if you are not interested to take the lead, please make way, as this great entity that has roots all over the country is getting snapped," Youth Congress leader from Kerala, CR Mahesh, wrote on Facebook.

A Youth Congress vice president, Mahesh contested the 2016 assembly polls from Karunagapally in Kollam district and lost to the Communist Party of India's R Ramachandran by 1,759 votes. Mahesh said the Congress in Kerala was without a president for two weeks.

"This comes at a time when the failures of the CPM and the Bharatiya Janata Party have to be highlighted and also when the top leadership of the party in the Congress is watching from the sidelines the factional feud going on in the KSU," he said, referring to the student wing of the Congress.

He also urged former defence minister AK Antony to breaks his silence on what's happening in the Congress. "We are prepared to die to see that the Indian National Congress stays alive in the country but it should be ensured that merit should be given due credit," Mahesh said.

In recent times, several Congress leaders have openly voiced their discontentment against the party's top leadership after the Congress' poor performance in the assembly polls in five states. However, no one has directly asked Rahul to leave his post. Currently, Rahul is in the United States with Sonia, who is undergoing treatment in the country.
