Rahul Gandhi Urges PM Modi To Visit Manipur, Restore Peace Amid Ongoing Violence

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence in Manipur. He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the state and help restore peace.

His comments came after three bodies were recovered from a river, leading to attacks on residences of state ministers and MLAs by protesters.

In response to the unrest, the government imposed prohibitory orders in five districts indefinitely and suspended internet services in certain areas. Rahul Gandhi highlighted the need for reconciliation after more than a year of division and suffering. He reiterated his call for the Prime Minister to visit Manipur and work towards healing the region.

Protests Escalate Amidst Tensions

In Imphal, protesters targeted the homes of three legislators, including that of Chief Minister N Biren Singh's son-in-law. The demonstrators set properties on fire, prompting security forces to use tear gas to disperse them. The Congress party has criticised the Prime Minister for not visiting Manipur and has condemned the Centre's handling of the ethnic conflict.

The violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities has resulted in over 200 deaths since May last year. This ongoing strife has heightened tensions in the northeastern state, with calls for urgent intervention from both Central and state governments.

Calls for Peace and Reconciliation

Rahul Gandhi emphasised that every Indian hoped for efforts towards reconciliation from both Central and state authorities. He stressed that finding a solution was crucial to ending the prolonged suffering in Manipur. The situation remains tense as authorities attempt to manage the unrest and prevent further violence.

The Congress continues to pressure Prime Minister Modi to address the crisis directly by visiting Manipur. They argue that his presence could help facilitate dialogue and promote peace between conflicting communities.

The ongoing violence underscores the need for immediate action to restore stability in Manipur. As tensions persist, there is an urgent call for leadership to guide efforts towards lasting peace and reconciliation in the region.
