Rahul Gandhi Relocates After Two Decades: New Residence At Sunehri Bagh

After two decades at 12 Tughlak Lane, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is preparing to move to his new official residence, 5 Sunehri Bagh, in New Delhi. The Rae Bareli MP and leader of the Opposition has chosen this property from several options presented to him, and a formal letter of approval for the Type Eight bungalow has been submitted to the government.

Recently, Gandhi's sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited the new residence. Reports indicate that Gandhi was initially offered the option to stay at 12 Tughlak Lane, but he opted for the Sunehri Bagh residence, citing concerns about "not good Vastu," which was deemed inauspicious.

As leader of the Opposition, Gandhi is entitled to a Type Eight bungalow, similar to those granted to cabinet-rank leaders. The Sunehri Bagh property was previously occupied by A Narayanaswamy, a former Karnataka BJP leader and Minister of State for Social Justice from 2021 to 2024, who lost his seat in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

Last year, Gandhi faced a controversy when he was asked to vacate his residence following his disqualification as an MP. However, after his conviction was overturned by a higher court, he was reinstated in the same property in August.

Gandhi's mother, Sonia, an MP from Rajya Sabha, continues to reside at her 10 Janpath residence, which is connected to the Congress office at 24 Akbar Road. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was asked to vacate her allotted residence at 35 Lodhi Road in 2020, following the withdrawal of SPG protection. She had been given this home in 1997.

In 2021, the government decided to withdraw SPG protection for the Gandhi family due to the reduced threat perception, following the assassinations of two former prime ministers. The family now has Z Plus security with CRPF cover, with SPG protection limited to the current Prime Minister.
