Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Sunday launched a 'white T-shirt movement,' asserting that economic inequality in the country is on the rise as the Narendra Modi government remains focused on 'enriching a select few capitalists.'

Rahul Gandhi criticised the government for 'neglecting the poor' and urged his 'working-class colleagues' and young people to join the movement in large numbers.

What is the 'white T-shirt movement'?

1. According to the campaign's website, the white T-shirt is described as more than just a garment; it represents the movement's five core principles: compassion, unity, non-violence, equality, and progress for all.

2. These values, the website states, 'resonate with the essence of India's 8,000-year-old civilisation, built on harmony and diversity.'

3. Additionally, it highlights that the increasing inequalities based on income, caste, and religion necessitate 'actions beyond ideology.'

4. The white T-shirt serves as a call for a 'just and unified India,' while also honouring the legacy of Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra and its follow-up, the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

5. It further adds that the T-shirt embodies the objectives of these 'yatras'-bridging divides and working towards a 'cohesive' and 'equitable' nation.

Why white T-shirt?

Much like the iconic 'Nehru jacket' associated with his great-grandfather, the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the white T-shirt has become emblematic of Rahul Gandhi. This likely influenced its selection as the movement's symbol.
