Central Government Approves Funding for Rafting Base Station in Rishikesh to Boost Tourism Infrastructure

A new rafting base station is set to be constructed in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, costing Rs 100 crore. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the central government, which has allocated Rs 3,295 crore for developing 40 tourist spots across 23 states under the Special Assistance for Capital Investment scheme. The current infrastructure for rafting in Rishikesh is insufficient, causing difficulties for both tourists and locals.

New Rafting Base Station Approved for Rishikesh

Challenges include the absence of a booking system at key rafting points like Brahmapuri and Shivpuri. Additionally, there are no proper facilities such as toilets or changing rooms at these locations. Safety measures are lacking, and traffic congestion in the Rishikesh-Tapovan-Shivpuri corridor further complicates matters. These issues hinder the potential growth of rafting tourism in the area.

Infrastructure Development and Economic Impact

The project aims to tackle these challenges by establishing a centralised rafting base station with necessary amenities. This includes toilets, changing rooms, and roadside eateries to enhance visitor experience. A standardised booking system will also be developed to streamline operations and attract more tourists to Rishikesh.

To alleviate traffic congestion, alternative routes will be constructed around Tapovan. An ITC-based monitoring system will be implemented to ensure safety and efficiency in operations. Additionally, a waste management system will be introduced to support environmental sustainability and preserve the local ecosystem.

Project Implementation and Monitoring

The state government will provide land and oversee the project's implementation, while the Union tourism ministry will monitor progress. The central government has already released 66 per cent of the funds to the states involved. The Centre has set a two-year deadline for completing the development work under this scheme.

This initiative is expected to create approximately 1,500 jobs, boosting economic development in the region. By addressing infrastructure gaps and improving facilities, the project aims to make Rishikesh a more attractive destination for tourists seeking adventure activities like rafting.

The establishment of this modern base station is crucial for enhancing Rishikesh's appeal as a tourist hub. With improved infrastructure and facilities, it is anticipated that more visitors will be drawn to experience the unique offerings of this yoga and tourism city.
