The by election to Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar (R K Nagar) assembly constituency will be held before December 31, Chief Election Commission Achal Kumar Jyoti said on Thursday.
Keeping in line with a court order to hold the bypoll before the end of this year, the election commission of India said that the same will be followed.
Speaking to the press during the announcement of Himachal Pradesh assembly election schedule, CEC C K Jyothi said that the bypoll to R K Nagar constituency, which was countermandedc y the ECI earlier in April this year, will be held before December 31.
The seat fell vacant following the death of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and AIADMK Chief J Jayalalithaa in December last year. The election commission decided to countermand the bypoll that was scheduled to take place in April this year after evidences of rampant corrupt electoral practices and bribery emerged.
The ECI had highlighted the role of Tamil Nadu Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar. Days before the byelection, officials from the Income Tax department told the EC that documents revealing details of crores or rupees given as bribes to voters had been recovered from his residence during IT raids.
The two warring factions of the AIADMK had decided to go their seperate ways in the R K Nagar bypoll with the party's symbol and name being frozen by the Election Commission. The ECI is likely to decide on the Two-leaves symbol row before the bypoll is scheduled in R K Nagar constituency again.
