Punjab Official Caught for Bribes Including Luxury Shoes Worth £3,000
In a significant crackdown on corruption within the revenue department, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau has apprehended Gurwinder Singh, a Revenue Patwari from Ludhiana, on charges of accepting bribes totaling over Rs 34 lakh. This sum notably includes an unconventional bribe of 'Pakistani juttis' valued at Rs 3 lakh. The arrest came after Singh surrendered to the police following the rejection of his bail application by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the bureau.

The case against Singh also implicates his immediate family members and his agent, with allegations of corruption that have shocked many. According to the bureau's spokesperson, the complaint that led to this arrest was filed by Babbu Tanwar, a Bathinda resident. Tanwar's grievance detailed how Singh, along with his agent Nikku, demanded and accepted bribes for various services, including the sanctioning of a property mutation near the Ludhiana bus stand.
Tanwar's allegations did not stop at monetary bribes. He claimed that Singh and his agent took Rs 3.40 lakh for purchasing two Apple iPhones and smart watches and accepted 'Pakistani juttis' worth Rs 3 lakh. Furthermore, Tanwar was coerced into spending an additional Rs 80,000 on Nikku’s birthday celebration. The investigation revealed that on four separate occasions, Singh, along with his accomplice Nikku, his father Parmjeet Singh, and brother Balwinder Singh, accepted another Rs 27.50 lakh in bribes from Tanwar.
Despite these substantial payments, the promised mutation of property was never completed, leaving Tanwar without recourse and prompting him to approach the Vigilance Bureau. This case highlights not only the extent of corruption within certain sectors but also the diverse forms that bribes can take, from cash to luxury goods and even extravagant parties.
The bureau's swift action in this matter underscores their commitment to rooting out corruption and holding those responsible accountable for their actions. As investigations continue, this case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against corruption in public services.
