Punjab Floods: PM Modi To Visit Affected Areas On September 9

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Punjab on September 9 to meet families affected by the devastating floods and review relief measures on the ground. The BJP's Punjab unit confirmed the visit on X, underlining the Prime Minister's commitment to supporting victims of the disaster.

Flood Damage in Punjab

Relentless monsoon rains have battered the state, impacting more than 1,900 villages across 23 districts. According to official figures, at least 43 people have died, while crops spread over 1.71 lakh hectares have been destroyed. Farmlands remain submerged, rivers are flowing above danger levels, and highways have been blocked due to flooding and landslides.

PM Modi is expected to assess the situation personally, focusing on both immediate relief and long-term recovery. Key measures include silt removal from fields, disease prevention, and safe disposal of dead animals once water levels recede. Coordination between the Centre and state government will be a priority.

Strengthening Defenses

Sources indicate that the Prime Minister will likely stress the urgent reinforcement of embankments along the Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, and Ghaggar rivers. Years of illegal mining and weak maintenance have left them vulnerable. Strengthening flood defenses is part of a broader disaster-preparedness plan aimed at protecting Punjab's farmlands and villages.

The Centre is also preparing short-, medium-, and long-term strategies to restore livelihoods and improve resilience against future floods.

Wider Northern Flood Crisis

The Punjab floods are part of a larger weather disaster sweeping northern India. In Himachal Pradesh, incessant rains since June 20 have triggered 95 flash floods, 45 cloudbursts, and 132 major landslides, leaving 355 dead and causing road damage worth nearly ₹3,800 crore. Over 1,200 roads remain blocked across districts such as Mandi, Shimla, Kullu, and Chamba.
