Punjab's CM Mann Inspects Flood Protection Work at Ghaggar River
In a proactive move to mitigate flood risks in Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann recently conducted an on-site review of the flood-prone areas along the Ghaggar river. This visit, aimed at assessing the preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season, marks a significant shift from past practices where state visits occurred post-flooding. Accompanied by senior government officials, Mann's inspection focused on the measures being implemented to prevent potential flood damage.

During his visit, Mann highlighted the stark contrast between his administration's approach and that of previous leaders, who he accused of exploiting such situations for photo opportunities without providing tangible relief to affected communities. By assessing the ongoing flood prevention efforts firsthand, Mann aims to ensure that the work is carried out efficiently, minimizing the risk to both life and property.
The Punjab government has embarked on a comprehensive strategy to combat flooding, which includes designing seasonal rivulets to handle a century's worth of flood discharge and delineating floodplains under the Northern India Canal and Drainage Act. Additionally, efforts to reinforce main river embankments have been prioritized to provide further protection against floods.
A notable aspect of the state's emergency response plan involves compiling a database of resources and volunteers, including bag suppliers, wire binders, earth-moving equipment operators, tractor trolley owners, divers, and local volunteers. This database will facilitate rapid response in case of emergencies. Moreover, strategic storage of both empty and filled cement bags is planned for immediate use during floods.
To further bolster flood defenses, bamboo plantations are being established on the inner slopes of rivers. Mann emphasized his understanding of the ground realities faced by residents and assured that more than 250,000 sandbags would be stored at key locations along the Ghaggar river in Sangrur district to prevent breaches.
Addressing infrastructure resilience, Mann announced that roads damaged by floods would be promptly repaired. A survey for this purpose has already commenced, with specific attention on strengthening the road connecting Moonak to Khanauri via Mandvi. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to not only preventing floods but also ensuring swift recovery from any damage incurred.
This series of measures reflects a holistic approach to flood management in Punjab, demonstrating the state government's dedication to safeguarding its citizens and their properties from the perennial threat of monsoon floods.
