Facing severe criticism for adding a clause that only vegetarians are eligible for gold medals, the Pune University has gone on course correction mode. The varsity has said that it would junk the medal if the clause is not dropped.
Few weird clauses were introduced in order to be eligible for the Maharishi Keertankar Shelar Mama Gold Medal. If you are a vegetarian or a tee-totaler you are eligible for the medal, the clause had also said.
The rules stated that in order to be eligible for the Maharishi Keertankar Shelar Mama Gold Medial, students should also know and follow Indian culture. They should have taken part in activities such as blood donation and environmental protection. They should have also taken part in sports at the national, international level and also should do yoga it had also said.
One of the donors have made some conditions and since the awards are sponsored, we follow their terms and conditions, Registrar of the University Arvind Shaligram had said.
Under no circumstance should this create any difference in communities in the society. As per the Constitution, every individual has the right to eat and drink what they want, and the university is aligned with it and will abandon any such clause, vice-chancellor Nitin Karmalkar said in a press conference on Saturday.
