Pune Teen Involved in Fatal Crash to Continue Observation and Counselling

In a recent development from Pune, the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) has decided to extend the observation home remand of a 17-year-old boy involved in a tragic car accident that resulted in the deaths of two IT professionals. The extension, set until June 25, comes as the investigation continues, with the teenager currently undergoing counselling sessions.

Pune Teens Observation Extended

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of May 19 in Kalyani Nagar, Pune, saw the youth, identified as the son of builder Vishal Agrawal, driving a Porsche car under the influence of alcohol. The vehicle collided with a motorbike, leading to the fatalities of Anish Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both natives of Madhya Pradesh and employed as IT engineers.

The Pune police, advocating for an additional 14-day custody at the observation home through prosecutors, emphasized the safety of the juvenile. They argued that his release could potentially obstruct the ongoing probe and other related inquiries, including allegations of blood sample swapping post-accident.

Despite opposition from the defence, which requested the minor's release to his relatives—given his parents are currently detained on separate charges linked to the incident—the JJB has ruled in favor of extending his stay at the facility. The decision was influenced by ongoing psychological counselling sessions aimed at aiding his rehabilitation.

Defence lawyer Prashant Patil highlighted that three counselling sessions have been completed with more planned. Patil noted improvements in the juvenile's condition, suggesting that continued stay in the observation home would facilitate his reintegration into society.

The case has also seen arrests beyond the immediate family. The boy's grandfather, Surendra Agarwal, faces charges including kidnapping the family's driver to coerce him into taking responsibility for the accident. Additionally, two doctors and an employee from Sassoon General Hospital have been apprehended for allegedly swapping the minor's blood samples with those of his mother's.

Pune police have registered three separate cases concerning this incident: one directly related to the accident, another against a pub for allegedly serving alcohol to the minor, and a third involving wrongful confinement and coercion of the family driver.

This case continues to unfold as authorities delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event and its aftermath. The extended remand period reflects ongoing efforts to ensure a thorough investigation while addressing the rehabilitation needs of the young individual involved.
